The Complete Etsy SEO Tags Guide for 2025

By Ahmed Mohamed Hamimi · January 2025 · 7 min read

Etsy gives you 13 tag slots. Most sellers waste at least 4 of them. This guide explains what goes in each slot, why single-word tags are nearly useless, and how to build a tag set that covers multiple buyer intents without duplication.

Why all 13 tags must be used

Each unused tag slot is a missed ranking opportunity. Etsy's algorithm uses tags to match your listing to buyer searches. A listing with 8 tags can only rank for 8 clusters of search terms. A listing with 13 well-chosen tags can rank for 13 — often with significant keyword overlap across buyer intents that compounds your visibility.

Why your tags must be multi-word (2–3 words)

Etsy buyers rarely search for one-word terms like "ring" or "candle." They search for "gold ring women," "personalized candle gift," or "minimalist silver bracelet." Single-word tags match too broadly and compete against millions of listings. Two-to-three word tags match buyer intent precisely.

Every tag should be a phrase a real buyer would type into the Etsy search bar. If you wouldn't type it yourself while shopping, don't use it as a tag.

How to cover multiple keyword themes

A strong tag set covers at least 3 different keyword themes. For a handmade ring, these might be: material (sterling silver ring, 925 silver jewelry), occasion (gift for her, birthday jewelry gift), and style (minimalist ring, dainty band ring). A tag set that only covers one theme leaves most buyer searches unaddressed.

Long-tail tags: why at least 2 are required

Long-tail tags are 3-word phrases that are highly specific — "stackable ring set women" or "dainty gold ring gift." They have lower search volume but much higher buyer intent. Including at least 2 long-tail tags increases your conversion rate from search impressions because buyers using those specific phrases are closer to buying.

Tags must match title keywords

Etsy's algorithm rewards consistency between title keywords and tags. If your title contains "minimalist silver ring," at least one tag should contain "minimalist ring" or "silver ring." The rule of thumb: at least 5 of your 13 tags should contain exact words from your title.

What not to use as tags

  • Your shop name or brand name (Etsy already knows who you are)
  • Exact duplicates of another tag (near-duplicates count too)
  • Generic product words without modifier ("ring," "necklace," "print")
  • Shipping or policy information ("fast shipping," "gift wrapped")
  • Holiday tags that are permanently in your listing year-round
